In the year 1860, an English periodical named Cornhill Magazine carried four controversial essays by John Ruskin. Notwithstanding the severe criticism, or due to it, these essays were later published in form of a book titled Unto This Last. Forty-four years later, a young Indian barrister in South Africa found this book, recommended by a friend at a vegetarian restaurant. He completed the book in one go on a train journey from Johannesburg to Durban. The barrister, named Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who would later be hailed as the father of the newly independent nation India, could not sleep a wink the night he read the book. Four years later, in 1908, he would translate the book into his mother tongue Gujarati under the title Sarvodaya, literally meaning “the welfare of all.”

Ruskin’s upholding of the dignity of labour and vision of a world where everyone, irrespective of their job title, had an equal dividend on the output, had a profound impact on Gandhi’s theory of “Trusteeship, economic equality, relationship between the employer and the employees and the use of modern technology.” Gandhi envisioned an Indian sarvodaya possible only through the development of the last person standing, designated by another similar term antodaya.

The concept of antodaya became the core of the philosophical and political writings of another Indian scholar, Pundit Deen Dayal Upadhyay, who laid out an indigenous path through which the development of all could be achieved. The popular slogan of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas,” literally meaning the “fellowship of all and the welfare of all,” popularised by the incumbent government of India today, seems to pay homage to the idea of antodaya and sarvodaya. Most people in India would know sarvodaya and antodaya as political and economic reform movements, without being aware of their distant roots.
